Hey there, I have been searching for rust jobs in blockchain for some time and observed that most of them mention Rust skills as mandatory. So it is the case that most of the Rust jobs are for blockchain and crypto only or still have other jobs only.

Let me introduce myself, I have 4 years of experience as backend developer but I am not aware of the blockchain tech. So my question is if I have to prep for the interview with blockchain project, companies will give priority for candidates with blockchain experience? Do I need to deep dive into blockchain concepts or conceptual knowledge is enough?

Can any blockchain rust developer help me this query? What should I do for interview preparation?

Yeah, I’ve noticed the same thing—most Rust job listings seem to be all about blockchain, crypto, and Solana. The main reason? Rust is crazy fast, safe, and great at handling a bunch of things at once, which makes it a perfect fit for blockchain. So now, a lot of companies in that space have basically made it their go-to language.

Do you have to know blockchain to get a Rust job? Not always, but it depends on the industry. In crypto, companies definitely prefer devs who at least understand smart contracts, DeFi, or basic blockchain concepts. Even if you’re not writing smart contracts, working with blockchain means dealing with things like state management, gas fees, and parallel execution (Solana’s runtime is a good example).

That said, Rust jobs outside of blockchain do exist—think embedded systems, OS development, game engines, and high-performance backends. The catch? Web3 has way more demand right now, so those non-blockchain Rust jobs can be harder to find.

If you’re open to it, learning blockchain stuff could open a ton of doors. But if you really don’t want to go down the Web3 rabbit hole, you might have to dig a bit deeper for Rust roles in other fields.

Hi ...umm actually you are not the only person who is thinking on this questions. umm, it is correct observation that lot of rust developer openings in blockchain industry due to the fact that blockchain protocols like Solana, Polkadot, and Near are using Rust.

Now, coming to interviews....yes, recruiters do prefer candidates with blockchain experience but it is not always mandatory. If you already have good Rust backend experience, its a added advantage for you over other candidates. For prep, I would suggest to focus on understanding key blockchain concepts like wallets, smart contracts, consensus, etc. and try your hands on open-source Rust blockchain code. Show your curiosity, and willingness to learn in the interview. Best of luck.
