Staff Backend Engineer — Backend Systems

Mesh is building infrastructure to enable seamless crypto payments by connecting tokenized assets with real-world financial use cases. This role operates within a distributed engineering team focused on backend systems, APIs, and financial transaction flows across a remote setup.
As a Staff Backend Engineer, the position owns system architecture, backend service development, and cross-functional technical decision-making. The role contributes to scaling backend infrastructure, improving system reliability, and supporting crypto-enabled payment flows. It also plays a key part in scaling a web3 team, mentoring engineers, and influencing product and engineering direction within a high-growth environment.
🔹 Responsibilities
• Own and drive roadmap and implementation across multiple focus areas, balancing short- and long-term priorities
• Drive technical architecture decisions and system design
• Provide technical leadership across engineering teams
• Collaborate with leadership, product, and design teams to define strategy
• Develop and maintain backend services and APIs
• Work with Azure cloud services for deployment and scalability
• Conduct testing, debugging, and resolve software defects
• Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies
• Write efficient, reliable, and high-quality code following best practices
• Optimize backend systems for performance and large-scale data handling
• Build secure, crypto-first products supporting payments and transfers
• Drive best practices in software engineering and system architecture
• Champion infrastructure as code and DevSecOps practices
🔹 Requirements
• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• Minimum 3 years in fintech or payments infrastructure
• Strong backend expertise in one or more: C#, C++, Go, Java, Python
• Experience with cloud-native development (Azure), Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD
• Strong security knowledge including AuthN, AuthZ, SAML, API security, and encryption
• Understanding of crypto concepts such as blockchains, RPCs, and self-custody wallets
• Solid experience with RESTful APIs and microservices architecture
• Experience leading engineering efforts in high-growth startup environments (preferred)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability in ambiguous environments
• Ability to make critical technical decisions under pressure
