  • Answering 'Why Blockchain?' in Interviews for Cybersecurity

I’ve been in cybersecurity for four years, but not in anything blockchain-related. Now I’m trying to make the jump, and every interview, I get hit with the same question: “Why do you wanna work in blockchain?”

And honestly, I don’t know how to answer it in a way that feels natural. Should I talk about my technical skills and how they transfer? Or should I focus more on my personal interest in blockchain? I mean, cybersecurity is obviously a big deal in this space, but is that reason enough?

I don’t wanna sound like I’m just saying what they wanna hear, but at the same time, I don’t wanna come across as unsure about my decision. What do recruiters actually expect? How do I make my answer sound confident without overthinking it?

If anyone’s made this switch or has interviewed candidates for these roles, I’d love to hear what works (or what totally flops).

Recruiters want clear, concise answers that show genuine interest and a strong connection between your skills and the blockchain industry. Focus on three key points: your technical expertise, your personal interest in blockchain, and how your cybersecurity background fits into this space. Avoid generic statements and highlight specific reasons that motivate your transition.

Here’s a structured response: "I have four years of hands-on experience in cybersecurity, focusing on securing systems, managing vulnerabilities, and mitigating threats. Blockchain interests me because of its decentralized architecture, which creates unique security challenges like smart contract vulnerabilities, consensus mechanism risks, and private key management. These areas align with my expertise, allowing me to apply proven security principles in a dynamic environment. I want to work in blockchain because it pushes the boundaries of traditional security models, offering continuous learning opportunities and complex problem-solving. This fast-paced, evolving landscape excites me, and I’m eager to contribute my skills to secure blockchain ecosystems."

This answer stays direct, connects your background to blockchain, and reflects genuine motivation, making it clear, engaging, and convincing.

You’re overthinking it! The best way to answer this is to connect your cybersecurity experience with blockchain’s security challenges and show genuine enthusiasm for the space.

Start with: “Cybersecurity and blockchain are deeply connected. I’ve spent four years securing systems, preventing breaches, and understanding attack vectors. Blockchain takes this to another level—decentralization, smart contract security, and cryptographic principles create new challenges that I’m excited to tackle.”

Then, add a personal touch: “I’ve been following blockchain’s growth, and what excites me most is [mention a specific area—DeFi security, smart contract audits, zero-knowledge proofs]. I see a huge opportunity to bring my security mindset to this field.”

This shows both transferable skills and passion. This way, you’re showing both expertise and genuine curiosity—exactly what recruiters look for. You don’t need to have all the answers, just a strong reason why this shift excites you. Keep it real, keep it confident, and trust that your skills bring real value to the space.
