Principal Software Engineer — AI / LLM Systems

Coinbase operates a global platform focused on expanding access to financial systems through blockchain infrastructure and is evolving into an AI-first organization. This role sits at the intersection of backend engineering and applied AI, owning the design of agentic systems that automate workflows across product and core functions. 

Working remotely across US time zones, you will define architecture for LLM-driven systems, orchestration layers, and AI primitives that improve scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this position carries organization-wide impact and supports scaling a web3 team by embedding automation deeply into engineering and business processes.

Supporting long-term web3 talent acquisition strategy, this role focuses on building foundational AI capabilities across the organization.

🔹 Responsibilities

• Design and build multi-agent AI systems enabling autonomous execution and complex reasoning
• Develop evaluation frameworks to improve reliability and reduce hallucinations in LLM systems
• Build core AI primitives and orchestration tools for organization-wide adoption
• Partner with leadership to identify and implement high-impact automation opportunities
• Apply backend engineering principles (scalability, reliability, performance) to AI systems in production
• Mentor senior engineers and elevate AI and engineering standards across teams

Driving blockchain infrastructure roles at scale requires strong alignment between engineering systems and AI capabilities.

🔹 Requirements

• Extensive experience with LLMs, RAG, and agentic frameworks
• Strong backend engineering expertise with scalable system design
• Proven experience leading technical strategy across multiple domains
• Ability to design systems addressing evaluation, grounding, and reliability challenges in AI
• Hands-on experience using generative AI tools and copilots in production workflows
• Strong understanding of prompt engineering, fine-tuning, and LLM limitations

Nice to Have:

• Experience with multi-agent AI systems
• Background in fintech or regulated environments
• Contributions to open-source AI/ML ecosystems (e.g., LangChain, AutoGPT)

🔹 Compensation & Benefits

• Base salary: $297,670 – $350,200 USD
• Additional compensation may include bonuses and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k))
