Web3 Business Development Jobs: What the Role Really Looks Like
Editorial note: Based on a live posting on Web3 Career (reviewed 6 October 2026) and discussions in our community.
Search for Web3 business development jobs, and you'll get over a thousand results. BD Associate, Partnerships Manager, Ecosystem Lead: same work, different labels. Pay runs from around $54k for associates to $180k and up for senior and head-level roles.
If you're coming from SaaS, one thing will feel strange. There's usually no clean sales target. Nobody hands you a pipeline target and a commission plan. Success means an integration that real users actually touch.
Web3 Partnerships Manager Responsibilities: The Three Pillars
Ecosystem mapping. Before you message anyone, make notes for potential clients: which protocols they are using right now, what they can build using your product, whether you can offer something complimentary to their existing product, and so on.
Make working notes around the expected Boil it down to one sentence, like "If wallet X supports our token, holders have a reason to stay." That's your partnership thesis.
Super-connecting. Web3 protocols make use of social media like X, Telegram, Discord, and at events. A warm intro from a mutual contact overrides a cold DM almost every time. When you do cold outreach, open with a specific idea that is relevant for both sides, and skip "let's explore synergies."
Technical integration routing. Once a client says yes, you become the bridge between two teams. You should make notes around what's being built, get the right engineers in the room, check whether a security audit is needed, and bring in legal early if tokens are involved. Even if you don't need to code, you should be able to ask relevant questions to the teams.
How Much Tech Knowledge Do You Need for Web3 BD?
In our community thread on this, Jeevesh Kuril, who has closed 75 + partnership deals said it depends on the product. For a DeAI/DePIN data protocol, BD should be able to read an architecture overview and explain how data, tokens and assets move.
For a campaign tool or NFT marketplace, a short onboarding brief is often enough. Their red flag is an early call that ends with "let's schedule time with the tech lead" because nobody could answer a basic question, like how funds flow.
Their fix was an "objections and overview" doc for interns, so anyone could answer the obvious questions alone. It's easier to close a partner, they said, when you can picture the integration before outreach.
Web3 Partnership Case Study: Layer-2s and Cross-Chain Bridges
Names are invented. XYZchain is a new Layer-2, a network built on a bigger chain to make transactions economical. ABClink is a cross-chain bridge, a tool that moves assets between blockchains.
Map. ABCchain's BD lead sees that new users arrive through one slow route. Her thesis: a faster bridge would shorten onboarding.
Connect. A mutual contact in their network introduces her to ABClink. She approached with specific offer instead of just a greeting.
Structure. She pitches a win for all three sides: ABClink gets new volume, ABCchain gets active wallets, users get a faster first transaction. They begin with co-marketing and a time-limited fee rebate for first-time users. A token swap can wait until the integration proves itself.
Route. She writes a one-page brief covering supported assets, audit status, who handles support, and what happens if something breaks. Nothing is announced before the audit.
Measure. The agreed number is wallets that bridge in and are still transacting 30 days later. Raw volume is easy to inflate with rewards.
Analyzing a Real Web3 Business Development Job Description
Axiom (YC W25), a trading platform, is hiring a BD Associate in Austin. It asks for someone to understand the crypto ecosystem and spot opportunities (mapping), run outreach on Telegram, X, Discord and LinkedIn (super-connecting), and help close partnerships and integrations while tracking the pipeline (routing). The posting states a base of $65k to $80k, and the board estimates $54k to $90k. It also says crypto knowledge is preferred, not required.
Building a Web3 Ecosystem Map with Dune Analytics
Blockchain data is public, and Dune lets you query it for free.
Pick a chain and a 30-day window.
Run the query below to list the busiest apps by unique users (check table names in Dune's explorer, as they change).
Label each app: we depend on them, they build on us, or they complement us.
Score each for user overlap, effort and fit.
Pick three and write one specific proposal for each.
sql
SELECT project,
COUNT(DISTINCT taker) AS wallets,
SUM(amount_usd) AS volume_usd
FROM dex.trades
WHERE blockchain = 'arbitrum'
AND block_date >= current_date - interval '30' day
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY wallets DESC
LIMIT 25
Redo the map every quarter.
