Senior Blockchain Security Engineer
Remote · United States
Coinbase is a global cryptocurrency exchange and blockchain infrastructure company focused on expanding economic access through digital assets and onchain financial systems. The Senior Blockchain Security Engineer role sits within Coinbase’s Blockchain Security (BlockSec) team, which focuses on protecting funds, protocols, and wallet interactions across blockchain networks.
This position operates in a remote United States work environment and collaborates across engineering, infrastructure, and security teams responsible for safeguarding crypto systems at scale. The role focuses on evaluating blockchain security risks, reviewing smart contracts and distributed systems architecture, and strengthening internal tooling used to monitor and defend blockchain infrastructure. Teams working in web3 security roles frequently collaborate across protocol engineers, application security teams, and infrastructure specialists to maintain resilience against sophisticated threats targeting blockchain networks.
Teams responsible for protecting blockchain infrastructure roles often collaborate closely with engineering groups and internal security tooling teams.
🔹 Responsibilities
• Identify gaps in Coinbase’s crypto-security infrastructure and drive cross-functional initiatives to resolve them
• Perform security assessments, framework development, and threat modeling for blockchain protocols, smart contracts, and distributed ledger technologies
• Partner with software engineering teams to review code and architecture for internal smart contract development
• Collaborate with internal tooling teams to shape the roadmap and vision for Coinbase blockchain security tooling
• Identify automation opportunities across tooling and security processes, build proof-of-concept solutions, and define detailed technical requirements
• Investigate major ecosystem changes, including blockchain upgrades, protocol innovations, and developments such as zero-knowledge proofs
• Publish internal and external research, including security findings, vulnerability analyses, incident investigations, and integration risks
For organizations scaling a web3 team, security engineers help ensure blockchain systems are designed with strong threat modeling and cryptographic safeguards.
🔹 Requirements
• Strong understanding of blockchain systems, particularly EVM-based chains, and a crypto-focused technical background
• 4+ years of experience in security engineering with emphasis on blockchain, distributed systems, or cryptographic infrastructure security
• Extensive experience designing and performing threat modeling for security-critical backend crypto systems
• Deep expertise in application security and applied cryptography, including primitives used in blockchain protocols such as signing schemes, hash functions, zero-knowledge proofs, and MPC
• Familiarity with onchain activity fundamentals including blockchain explorers, funds tracing, bridging mechanisms, DEXs, NFTs, and smart contracts
• Awareness of emerging ecosystem innovations such as restaking models and proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs)
• Ability to provide leadership and mentorship within engineering teams
• Experience working in cross-functional environments or leading teams
• Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including the ability to translate complex security risks into actionable recommendations
• Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GPT Codex
• Demonstrated ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots such as LibreChat, Gemini, or Glean while applying human-in-the-loop practices to improve efficiency and output quality
🔹 Nice to Have
• Knowledge of security architecture for non-EVM blockchain networks
• Advanced cryptography experience including zk-SNARKs, FHE, or MPC
• Experience working with data platforms such as MongoDB, Snowflake, Databricks, or Dune
