Category Labs (formerly Monad Labs) is building high-performance infrastructure around an optimized EVM client designed to improve blockchain throughput without sacrificing portability. This position sits within web3 smart contract roles focused on application-layer engineering over a next-generation EVM implementation.
As a Smart Contract Engineer, you will design and implement Solidity contracts optimized for the performance characteristics of the Monad client. The role includes collaborating with application and infrastructure teams, identifying ecosystem needs, and contributing to new primitives enabled by improved execution performance. This is a full-time hybrid (New York) or remote role for engineers experienced in Solidity, Foundry, Hardhat, and blockchain infrastructure environments.
This role supports application-layer innovation on a high-performance EVM stack, where strong system design and security fundamentals are essential.
πΉ Responsibilities
β’ Implement Solidity smart contracts optimized for throughput and execution characteristics of the Monad client
β’ Collaborate with the core engineering team to design new primitives enabled by improved EVM performance
β’ Identify gaps within the application developer ecosystem and propose practical solutions
β’ Work directly with external application and infrastructure teams to unblock development efforts
β’ Contribute to technical discussions, reviews, and documentation within a small engineering team

πΉ Requirements
β’ At least 4 years of software engineering experience
β’ Minimum 3 years of hands-on Solidity smart contract development
β’ Prior experience in blockchain engineering at a Layer 1, Layer 2, or infrastructure project (e.g., oracle, bridge, indexer, RPC provider, wallet, or high-performance application)
β’ Strong proficiency with Foundry and Hardhat
β’ Deep understanding of application-layer smart contract security vulnerabilities
β’ Backend engineering experience in low-level languages such as C, C++, or Rust
β’ Experience building and shipping significant systems, ideally with active users
β’ Strong communication skills and willingness to engage in design reviews and technical discussions
β’ Practical problem-solving ability, strong system design skills, and a rigorous development mindset
